Selling gold on the Western Slope
Sell gold in Grand Junction and see exactly how your offer was worked out.
Gold is priced from three numbers. They are what it weighs, how pure it is and the gold price that day. Sell gold in Grand Junction to the Gold Guy and you watch all three worked out in front of you, and you leave with the arithmetic on paper.
- Every piece is tested and weighed where you can see the scale.
- The weight, the karat and that day's gold price are written on your offer.
- Your gold stays yours until you say yes to the number.

Why Western Slope sellers bring their gold to the Gold Guy
We test the metal and never take a stamp on faith.
The stamp tells us what the maker claimed, and the test tells us what the metal is. Now and then a ring with no stamp at all turns out to be solid gold.
No two karats share a pan.
Ten karat and eighteen karat hold very different amounts of gold. We read the stamp inside each band under a loupe and weigh one karat at a time with the scale facing you, so your eighteen karat is paid as eighteen karat.
You get the math, and you get to keep it.
The offer goes on paper with the weight, the purity, the gold price we used and the total. Check our multiplication while we are together, or check it again at your kitchen table.
You deal with the Gold Guy himself.
He looks at your gold, makes the offer and explains each check as he does it. He also wrote REAL MONEY, a book on precious metals, and he likes a seller who asks questions.
The gold we buy, and how each kind is valued
We buy gold jewelry in every karat and in any condition, and we buy dental gold, gold coins and gold bars as well. Karat is a fraction with 24 on the bottom. A 10K piece is 41.7 percent gold, 14K is 58.3 percent, 18K is 75 percent and 22K is 91.7 percent.
Gold is quoted by the troy ounce, which is 31.1 grams. Take a 14K chain that weighs 10 grams. It holds 5.83 grams of pure gold, and that much gold at the day's price is where the offer starts. Jewelry has to be refined before its gold is sold again, so we pay on refined value, and that figure can run under the spot price on your phone.
Coins and bars come in with their weight and purity already known. A one-ounce American Gold Eagle is struck in 22 karat gold and still carries one full troy ounce of pure gold, and an American Buffalo is 24 karat. Coins are looked at as coins before they are weighed as gold.
How selling your gold works
- Send us a few lines about your gold. Tell us what the pieces are and which stamps you can read. We write back with what to bring.
- Bring it to the Gold Guy in Grand Junction. Have your government-issued photo ID with you. The gold is sorted by karat, tested and weighed a pile at a time while you watch.
- Read the number and decide. Accept it, turn it down or accept part of it. Say yes and we send payment within 24 hours, as a check, an ACH transfer or store credit.
Your gold, your call.
Looking costs you nothing and binds you to nothing. A yes has to be said out loud, and a no is a perfectly good answer. Sell the broken chains and keep your mother's ring, or pocket the offer and think about it.
You are treated better here, and you will know more about your gold on the way out than you did on the way in. Selling to a dealer who shows his math is a wise and prudent decision.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I sell gold in Grand Junction?
Sell it to the Gold Guy in Grand Junction. He serves every corner of Mesa County and the towns well beyond it.
How do I know what karat my gold is?
Look inside the ring band or beside the clasp for a small stamp such as 10K, 14K or 18K, or the numbers 417, 585 or 750. Bring it even with no stamp at all, because we test everything.
What do GF, GP and HGE mean on a piece?
GF is gold-filled, GP is gold-plated and HGE is heavy gold electroplate, and each is a layer of gold over another metal. Plated pieces go back into your hand.
Will testing hurt my gold?
Every piece is verified in front of you, and the checking does your gold no harm. Nothing that could mark a piece is done without your say-so.
Tell us what you have.
A few lines will do. Tell us what it is, roughly how much of it there is, and any stamps or dates you can read, and we will write back with what to bring and what to expect. If you are still working out what is in the box, the seller quiz will sort it out in a few minutes.
