Gold Guy

A real coin from another country, in the mail every month.

The Cambist Club is the Gold Guy's coin club for kids. A parent or guardian signs up. Every month a box arrives with a real coin or banknote and a report on the country it came from, and the club's own website opens a collection, a globe and a ten-year course in money.

Leave your email and we will write on the day membership opens, with the price of each level, the first month at half price and shipping included. An adult signs up. The coin is the child's to keep. Shipping is included in the membership, to addresses in the United States.

A box in the mail, and a club online.

  • A genuine coin or banknote each month. It comes from a country that is kept secret until the box is opened, and it is picked out at our shop. It is the child's to keep.
  • The Cambio, a report on that country's money. One report about the coin and the place it came from. Every Cambio answers the same four questions.
  1. Where is it from? The country the coin comes from.
  2. How does the money work? That country's monetary system.
  3. What is it worth in dollars? How the currency converts to the dollar.
  4. What does it buy? What it buys in its own country, compared with what about the same money buys here.

The Cambist Club online

Every membership includes the club's own website for members.

  • The Coin Case keeps every coin together with its country and its story.
  • A globe of the world's currencies, explored one country at a time.
  • A ten-year course in money, in short lessons that explain every answer.
  • Five games built on real coins.
  • Mint cards in the box, each one drawing a collector coin into the case.
  • Loupe tokens, each one asking the Loupe to identify a coin.

Money makes more sense when you can hold it.

A child today often meets money as a number on a screen. A coin from another country is different. It has weight, a picture and words in another language, and it came from a place that can be found on a map.

We are a coin and bullion shop in Grand Junction, Colorado. Foreign coins and paper money reach us from people who sell them or donate them, and the Cambist Club puts those coins into curious hands.

One coin and one report a month is enough to start a collection and a conversation.

What a country sheet looks like.

Every month's sheet is laid out the same way, so a child knows where to look. This is the layout, with a note on what goes in each part.

Country
The country the coin comes from.
The coin
Its name, its denomination, the years it was made and what it is made of.
How the money works
A short note on that country's monetary system.
In US dollars
How the currency converts to the dollar, with the date of the rate, because rates move.
What it buys: There
What this coin's value buys in its own country.
What it buys: Here

Four steps from sign-up to your child's first coin.

  1. You sign up in minutes. You choose a level, add your name and email and the collector's first name, and the first month is half price.
  2. Your box goes out. A real coin or banknote, the Cambio and the Mint cards for your level, sent by post to an address in the United States.
  3. Your child opens it. They hold a coin from another country and read the story of the place it came from.
  4. The learning begins. The Coin Case, the globe and the first lessons open for your child online.

These steps begin when membership opens.

Choose how fast your child's collection grows

Price is by level only. Every level opens the whole Club, and the age group you choose only picks the version of the lessons and games, never the price. What changes with the level is how many Mint cards arrive in each box, how many Loupe tokens arrive each month and how much you save on extras.

  • Apprentice Cambist. Everything in the Club, every month. A genuine coin or banknote and the Cambio in every box, the whole money course, the globe and the games, and one Mint card that adds a collector coin to your child's case.
1 Mint card in every box; 5 Loupe tokens each month, and unused tokens carry over; Extras at their usual price.
  • Journeyman Cambist. Twice the discoveries. Everything in Apprentice Cambist, plus a second Mint card in every box, so two collector coins join your child's case each month instead of one.
2 Mint cards in every box; 10 Loupe tokens each month, and unused tokens carry over; 5 percent off every extra.
  • Guild Cambist. The full collector's pace. Everything in Journeyman Cambist, plus a third Mint card, so three collector coins join the case every month and your child builds the Hoard faster than at any other level.
3 Mint cards in every box; 15 Loupe tokens each month, and unused tokens carry over; 10 percent off every extra.

Every Mint card draws from the same odds, shown below, so a higher level gives you more cards and never better odds. Extras are mystery bags of coins and printed coin binders, bought only by a parent, with the contents and price shown before you pay.

Leave your email and we will write with the price of each level.

The same odds on every card

Each Mint card is one draw from this table, the same at every level.

The chance of each class of collector coin in one Mint card draw
ClassChance of a drawIn plain words
Common55 percentmost pulls
Scarce27 percentabout one in four
Rare12 percentabout one in eight
Very Rare5 percentone in twenty
Key Date1 percentone in a hundred

The five chances add up to one hundred percent. A Key Date is a year in a series that is harder to find than the others. Circulated is separate: it means a coin shows wear from use. These classes show how often a draw lands there, not what any coin is worth.

What arrives, with shipping included

Here is the whole of it.

  • A monthly box. A genuine coin or banknote from a secret country, with the Cambio report on its money.
  • Mint cards. Each card's code draws a collector coin into the online Coin Case.
  • The Loupe. Identification tokens each month. One token lets your child ask the Loupe to identify one coin, and unused tokens carry over.
  • A Coin Case and a globe. Your child's collection, beside the world's currencies.
  • The Pecuniary and five games. A ten-year money course and games on real coins.

The first month will be half price, shipping will be included, and the list commits you to nothing.

Read a real Cambio and try a real lesson

Read a complete Cambio and try a real lesson before you decide. Both are the real material your child receives. The pages ask for no email address, set no cookie and record nothing about you.

Pause instead of cancelling, or cancel at any time

If your child has run short of time or interest for now, you can pause the membership instead of ending it. While it is paused, nothing is charged and no box is shipped, and your child's collection, rank and medals stay as they are. Pausing and cancelling sit side by side on your account page, and neither asks for a reason.

A pause lasts up to 2 months, and you may pause up to 2 times in any twelve months.

If you cancel, nothing further is charged after the period you have paid for ends, and a confirmation is sent to your email address. The payment page and the terms state what applies to the first month and to a year paid up front. A year paid up front is ten percent less than twelve months paid one at a time.

The grown-ups who sign a child up.

  • A parent. A small thing in the mail each month that is theirs to open and that you can read together.
  • A grandparent, aunt or uncle. A way to stay in touch every month, wherever in the country the child lives.
  • Anyone giving a gift. The box can be mailed to the child's home while the membership stays in your name.

The lessons and games come in two versions, for ages 8 to 12 and for ages 13 to 17. You choose the version when you sign up and can change it from your account page. The choice never changes the price.

Not sure it fits your family? Take the two-minute quiz. Choosing a gift? Take the one-minute gift quiz.

Everything your child gets.

  • The Exchange. A monthly box with a genuine coin or banknote from a secret country.
  • The Cambio. A report on that country's money, government and everyday prices, for you to read together.
  • The Mint. A card whose code draws a collector coin into the online Coin Case, with its story.
  • The Hoard. A series of real collector coins, each with its own story, waiting to be added by a Mint card.
  • The Coin Case. Every coin your child receives or already owns, kept together with its country and its story.
  • Nomisma. A globe of the world's currencies, explored one country at a time.
  • The Pecuniary. A ten-year course in personal finance, in short lessons that explain every answer.
  • Ludus. Five games built on real coins and honest arithmetic.

For parents and guardians

An adult always signs up, pays and holds the account. At checkout the only detail about a child is an optional first name or nickname for the envelope, and the age group is a band, never a date of birth. In the online club the adult sets up each collector's profile: a nickname and an age group and, only if the adult chooses, a birthday month and day, never the year, used only for a birthday-month gift or bonus where the club offers one. The club also keeps what a collector does there, such as lessons finished, coins added and points earned. If the adult switches on lesson reminders, the adult may type the collector's own email address or phone number after confirming being the parent, and one click stops them. A member can photograph a coin to identify it; the photographs go to an outside service, OpenAI, and we do not keep them. None of this is used for advertising or sold, and the adult can see it all, change or clear a birthday, delete a profile, or ask us to delete the membership. A coin shop in Grand Junction, Colorado runs the club, and a person answers every message. Read our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Who signs up?

An adult does. The membership, the email address and the payment are always in an adult's name. For each young collector the online club keeps a nickname and an age group, and, only if the adult adds them, a birthday month and day and a reminder email address or phone number. The privacy policy says what else is kept and who receives it.

What does the membership cost?

We will write with the price of each level on the day membership opens. The first month will be half price, shipping will be included, and a year paid up front will cost ten percent less than twelve months.

Does the age group change the price?

No. Price is by level only. The age group, 8 to 12 or 13 to 17, only picks the version of the lessons and games, and you can change it from your account page.

What exactly arrives each month?

A genuine coin or banknote from a country kept secret until the box is opened, the Cambio report on its money, and the Mint cards for your level: one, two or three.

Do more Mint cards mean better odds?

No. Every card, at every level, is one draw from the odds table on this page, so a higher level means more draws and never better odds.

What is the Cambist Club online?

It is the club's own website for members. There a child can keep the Coin Case, explore the globe of currencies, take the short lessons of the money course and play the games.

Are the coins and banknotes real?

Yes. Every one is genuine and was issued as money in its country, chosen for what it teaches and not for what it might fetch, and we make no promise about any coin's future worth.

Can I pause the membership instead of cancelling?

Yes. A pause stops the boxes and the charges, and your child's collection, rank and medals stay as they are. Cancelling is always beside it, and neither needs a reason. A pause lasts up to 2 months, and you may pause up to 2 times in any twelve months.

Can I cancel whenever I want?

Yes. You may cancel online from your account page at any time, with no reason needed, and nothing is charged after the period you have paid for ends.

Where do you ship?

Boxes ship to addresses in the United States, and shipping is included in the membership.

Why is it called the Cambist Club?

A cambist is a person skilled in exchanging one country's money for another's. Every Cambio shows how a coin's currency converts to the dollar, so the name fits what a member learns.

Where do the coins come from?

Foreign coins and paper money reach our shop from people who sell them or donate them. If you have foreign coins to pass along, we would be glad to hear from you.
